Cord Surfboards

CORD surfboards have heritage unmatched by most other surfboard brands… it all started in 1965.

Two brothers started a surfboard building business in Queensland in 1965, their ethos was design, innovation and build quality. From a small shop in Caloundra they ignited a cultural explosion in surfing that ripped through Australia and echoed around the world. David Lascelles started Cord Surfboards in Caloundra in 1965 and it soon attracted an elite group of board building pioneers who were later titled “The Hot Generation”.

At the Cord factory David “Humphrey” Lascelles was in the company of soon to be greats Bob McTavish, Kevin Platt, Daryl “Rooster” Dell, George Greenough and his younger brother Peter “Chops” Lascelles, in a few years together these guys not only shaped some of the most innovative boards Australia had seen to date, they shaped surfing culture for years to come.

For the next ten years “Humphrey” and “Chops” embarked on a journey around the world that took them to every corner of the surfing community, sometimes even to places that had never even been surfed. Unbelievably in the late 1970s they visited a small Cornish village, they stayed put and the rest is history!

“Chops” started a family with his wife Mary, whilst setting up and running one of Europe’s most successful surfboard factories he mentored UK shapers bringing designs and techniques that had not yet reached the shores of the UK as yet. He coached the British surfing team and was one of the first people to bring international surf stars and shapers to the UK including Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholemew and Cheyne Horan who were regular visitors back in the day!

In 2013 “Chops” sadly and suddenly passed. It left a hole in the local community and sent waves throughout the international surfing community. Markie inherited Cord, and with it all of it's heritage and the next part of the story is the now…

Here at Boardshop we’d been trying to persuade Markie to let us have a few CORD boards to offer to our customers but he was always flat out busy (or on holiday!), in 2023 he moved into the now vacant OPEN factory/shop in Aggie and the time was right to start working with one retailer.

We were stoked when Markie called up and said ‘lets make a plan!’

The board range… we’ve picked 4 board models from the CORD range which we feel cover everything you’d need to cover surfing in the UK and trips overseas

The Humbucker

Is it a groveler? Yes and No. it grovels with the best of them but there s so much more to this board, for most people it will cover 90% of the waves they’re ever likely to surf.

The Ark

An allrounder with performance for days, look at those channels and speed and hold/grip exactly when you need it. Feels amazing under your arm, one of the best balanced boards we’ve seen.

The Swordfish

Performance all day long, this board will take anything and everything you can throw at it. Speed, hold, drive its got it all and with that clever tail design plenty of release for vertical surfing too.

The Sunseeker

Ah yes, the mid length, no modern surfboard range is complete without one and this is one of the best. Loads of glide, easy to surf and will put a smile on your face all day long.

Cord surfboards represent top quality hand crafted surf vehicles that won’t disappoint. The design features have evolved over the years since it all began in the 1960s and these innovations work as well now as any other board designs out there, if not better!

We’re stoked to have the CORD range on board and we’re looking forward to working with Markie going forward to bring more great boards to you all.
