The Firewire Cornice First look

Surf giants Firewire have just released a rather unusual looking board into their line up! A collaboration two years in the making between the Surf Company and Trinity Technologies, a company that specialises in the science and aerodynamics behind the creation of wind turbine blades.

The Cornice uses Trinity's extensive knowledge and research on how wind passes over turbine blades, coupled with Firewire's board building expertise to create a board that is not only created to perform but to challenge peoples perception of how a board "should" look. The science behind this radical design is being dubbed a side cut, essentially taking foam from the centre of the board and placing it toward the tail, this in turn utilises the most effective area in contact with the water. The side cut design also focuses on displacing less water, producing less drag and as a result increases the speed of the board. The narrow almost snowboard like design also lends itself to the turning capabilities of the board, allowing your weight to shift from rail to rail with ease, speed and precision, giving the feeling of complete control in turns that you might not even attempt on another board.

We all know that Firewire are not afraid of challenging our perception on how a surfboard should look, take the Vader, and the Vanguard for example; once deemed a strange take on the conventional looking surfboard, they are now are some of our top selling boards here at Boardshop. Are we as a collective now more open to the idea that the conventional shape or pro model may not work for everyone? Do these new shapes and technologies hold the key for progression?

We at boardshop think the Cornice is a true testament that different isn't always a bad thing, and we will be waiting in anticipation for its official release to the public early this year! Rest assured that as a key partner with Firewire that they will land here first, with test models coming in early March, stay glued to the Boardshop blog for our official review and every mans ride report!
