Top 5 Surfboards For Christmas

A list like this is always a bit contentious, we’ve tried to poll as many different opinions as possible, looked at sales numbers and several other factors to decide on this list.

Funny thing is if we did it again next week we’d probably get a different result!

We’ve broken it down into the top 5 categories with a winner in each, read on…also a good idea to forward to your other half as a not so subtle hint…

  1. Grovelers

The Lib Tech x Lost Puddle Jumper

This is a proven shape, still the benchmark for most grovelers out there, its had a new lease of life in the ever improving Lib Tech construction. The flex pattern suits the board and the kind of waves you’re going to surf it in and with unrivalled environmental credentials its the winner. Huge honourable mentions go to the Pyzel Gremlin and Form Mini Flow Stik

  1. Fish

The Lost California Twin

OK not a pure Fish but its got a swallow tail! Its such a good board, one of those rare ones that as soon as you put it under your arm you know. Its taken a while with all Biolos’s various Round Nose Fish variations but this is the one. A huge seller and workable for a wide wide range of surfers and conditions. Honourable mentions to The Firewire Seaside of course and the CI Rocket Wide

  1. Hybrid

The Firewire Helium Evo

The toughest pick of them all, such an enormous number of boards to choose from. This board just will not go away, ever its just too good. Most surfers of all levels want speed and the Evo delivers it in spades, its forgiving too and covers the wave range that 90% of us will most likely ever surf. The Son of Cobra x Lost Cobra Killer twin comes close for its performance and aesthetics but it really is men and boys with the Evo towering over everything else.

  1. Mid Lengths

The Mark Phipps One Bad Egg

The board that has revitalised surfing for thousands of people, takes the frustration out of crowded line ups and puts a big big smile on your face. While your mates flounder you soar. The Form Flow Stik and Lost Smooth Operator both offer a good alternative, a slightly different take on achieving  the same goal.

  1. Shortboard

The Channel Islands Happy

Who remembers the CI Fred Rubble? Its was the all conquering shortboard for years but then just slipped off the radar, the Happy is a worthy replacement especially in the very very good Spinetek construction. This board will takes you through high performance shortboard surfing to full on step up conditions. The Pyzel Ghost is an absolute banger too, and Ian always makes a case for the Slater Omni!

So there it is, it’s been a brilliant year for new surfboard models and technological advances.

It’s never been easier to get a board that closely suits the waves you surf in and your ability, the choice seems to be endless.

The top board builders like CI, Lost, Firewire are leading the charge but there is a huge swing towards speciality models and collaborations between different people to produce some truly unique boards.

Keep and eye on Son Of Cobra, the Firewire Seaside & Beyond and the new FORM ADPT plus, all going to be smash hits for next year.

Thanks for your support this year, whatever you’re surfing enjoy it!
