Description
The Pyzel Ghost has been John John Florence's go-to shortboard for pretty much any decent waves encountered on the tour and is the magic stick he rode to his second World Title!
Pyzel's Ghost might be John John's 'go-to hack' but it would make a great daily driver or travel board for any competent shortboarder for decent to very good waves at home and overseas.
Initially designed to tackle powerful and hollow waves, the Ghost has proven to be comfortable in anything from offshore reefs to heavy beachies and point-breaks.
The Ghost was loosely based on the Short Cut with a fine tuned outline but still the wide point forward and a narrower nose and refined tail to help it fit into barrels and carve turns at speed.
The rocker all makes perfect sense, low through the front half for early wave entry and speed and a much more pronounced curve in the tail easing snappy turns and pocket surfing performance. Speed and lift are achieved with a full length single concave with a double concave inside. This combination of rocker and bottom contours results in a high performance surfboard with plenty of sensitivity along with a predictable level of control.
Sizing your Ghost will depend largely on where and in what conditions you want to ride it. Jon Pyzel says you can ride it up to 8" taller than you, up to 1/2" wider and up to 3/8" thicker than your regular shortboard.
Quite possibly the best one-board-quiver for the travelling surfer who is likely to encounter some good quality juice on his travels.
Jon Pyzel was raised in California, Santa Barbara to be exact and first started surfing while in junior high. Jon soon became hooked on surfing and was riding boards shaped by Carpinteria and Rincon Designs legend Matt Moore. Matt put Jon on his team and always took time to explain the finer points of surfboard shaping and surfboard design with Jon often watching-on as Matt shaped his boards.
Fast forward to 1992 and Jon made a permanent move to Oahu’s North Shore where he picked up work repairing boards at Country Surfboards. Jon then started working with master shaper and North Shore legend Jeff Bushman who used Jon as his back-shaper which proved to be the start of a glossy career in surfboard design and shaping.
The list of team riders speaks for itself with some of the greatest surfers of all-time still choosing Pyzel surfboards to compete at the very highest level and take on the worlds most challenging waves:
John John Florence, Kelly Slater, Jack Freestone, Michel Bourez, Koa Rothman, Koa Smith, Matt Archbold, Billy Kemper, Stu Kennedy, Mason Ho, Ross Williams, Fred Pattachia, Sally Fitzgibons, Ryan Hipwood, Billy Kemper, Shane Beschen, Punker Pat Towersy, Timmy Reyes and many many more.
