Description

The Surfworx Base Mini Mal foam soft top surfboard has all the attributes you'll need in your first surfboard. Designed to get you up and riding on your first session thanks to the nice wide and forgiving outline and the low rocker for easy paddling and early wave entry. The Base Mini Mal is constructed with a soft and forgiving foam deck and comes with a set of rubber safety fins to prevent injury to the rider, other surfers and swimmers.

The Base Mini Mal is constructed with a High Density Closed Cell foam Core which means the boards are nice and lightweight, and should you be unlucky enough to damage the outer durable EBS deck skin the board won't soak up water, become waterlogged and un-surfable. The board has a resin coated wooden stringer which helps the board maintain its shape and perform on the wave. The high density HDPE slick bottom is nice and durable and helps the board paddle fast and gives a smooth ride. The High Density deck skin is very durable and will keep the Base Mini Mal performing for years.

The Surfworx Base Mini Mal comes with a three fin "thruster" setup which gives great control and a nice stable and predictable ride.

A high quality beginner board for older surfers (or low fitness level)
I am new to surf and was looking for a starter board. Being 182cm and 79kg, I needed a fairly long board but not too long so it could fit in my flat. Having tried some foamboards in rental surf schools, I thought that foam top would be the choice even if I was always thinking the rental options felt cheap.

I was surprised to see the quality of this board: The bottom is not foam but a harder and smooth surface that makes it glide better. The top even if foam is well sealed and overall the feel of the board is more like a hardboard than a foam in terms of feeling/handling. So basically, the best of both worlds for beginners: a neat and compact board that looks and feels more like a hard board but with a foam top very forgiving on knocks and hits.

In terms of buoyancy and length, it is good for at least 80kg as I am but I would say that depending on your fitness level you might need a bigger board. I am 50 with a less than ideal fitness level and I felt 7.6" was at the edge of what I could handle to stand (or try standing!). All depends on your fitness, general balance, etc so do not put off by this as I think the size could be good for you; just sharing my experience from an older beginner.

It is overall a good quality beginner board at very reasonable price. Plus, the customer service of Boardshop is great so you can buy with confidence.
