Surfboard Fins

Surfboard Fins

Surfboard fins are a vital part of any surfboard, including its design, construction, how it feels and works on the wave. Surf board fins are always located on the bottom or underside of the surfboard, they are designed to provide, grip and also help you to steer the board.

Surf fins are available in a range of different sizes, materials and connection systems. The job of the fin is however the same, different flex and rake can alter certain attributes but only advanced surfers are able to see the benefits of these features. Surfboard fins have changed dramatically over the years from size and materials to the number used. Older style surf board fins were normally made from wood and then glassed directly into the bottom of the board these looked great and provided the lift and drive required. Due to the rigid and fixed nature it meant they were great in a straight line but not as easy to use in turns. As plastics and composites have advanced so have surf fins. A range of different fin boxes have developed within the surfing community each with their own merits.

Surfboard fins are now highly advanced and do make a different to the board as your technique and ability improves. Beginner boards are normally supplied with plastic surf board fins however these can easily be upgraded to larger, smaller, harder or softer fins depending on the style of riding you are into. Surf fins are normally categorised on three separate areas, once you have selected the size of fin you want to ride on, choose the material and finally consider where you will be using them. Surfboard fins can then be rated based on the drive, pivot and hold. This information has been the result of years of testing and development with top ASP surfers.

A different fin will affect the size and shape of the turns possible on a wave, face charging is no longer the style carves, cut backs and slides are the direction the sport is moving towards.
